I could about observe them constraining their trucks around the shop looking for things. I can't help thinking that the customers resemble sheep since they wear # 8217 ; t really care about what is going on around them. They only need to gain their things and travel on about their anxiety. Another great outline is when Sammy is taking a gander at the misss while they are remaining in his passageway. He perceived how they were treated by the chief and thought he would be the legend by ending to secure back at him. Also, despite the fact that he knew the misss wouldn # 8217 ; t be looking out for him outside the shop, he quit none the less. I didn # 8217 ; t quit on the grounds that I thought I was venturing out to be working at that place for a mind-blowing rest, but since I didn # 8217 ; t like working at that place any more. I chose to non travel in one twenty-four hours and when the executive called I said I had a logical order undertaking to make. At the point when she inquired as to whether I was venturing out to come in ever again I said no. That was a long clasp back and I would neer end an occupation as such again. I was youthful so and I on a very basic level was just worn out on working at that place. Sammy # 8217 ; s from now on is obscure. The request of conditions he quit in light of the fact that he thought he would be the misss knight in reflecting shield, or the fear that he would be stuck in a impasse occupation an incredible rest is surrendered over to the peruser. Possibly both of the answers are both valid. I think despite the fact that he thought in the dorsum of his head that the misss would be outside sitting tight for him, he knew in his chest that they wouldn # 8217 ; t be at that place. I wear # 8217 ; t accept Sammy # 8217 ; s from this point forward is in the food advertise shop concern however. One thing is sure however, Sammy # 8217 ; s in the future is up to him. It comes in all aspects of life, and in itself, it isnt always a bad thing. Stress can be a motivator to hard work, it can accompany exciting events, and life wouldnt be the same without it. Stress can even be good for us, particularly if it isnt experienced at overwhelming levels. And, just as stress comes from many areas of life, effective stress management comes from combating stress on many different fronts. Why Maintaining a Balanced Lifestyle Is Important Part of a comprehensive stress relief plan involves finding ways to calm down quickly so you can more effectively manage stress as it comes while avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress. Another important way to relieve stress is to maintain healthy lifestyle habits. Learning to live a healthy lifestyle often brings additional benefits too, such as an endorphin rush, a release of frustration, or added longevity. Many of the healthy lifestyle habits discussed here can also help you to become less reactive to stress, in the long run, providing protection against stress you havent even experienced yet While maintaining healthy habits is a bit more challenging than trying a stress relief method only once, the benefits you receive from maintaining a healthy lifestyle are more than worth the effort it takes to maintain it. The increases in health and wellness that you experience, as well as the reduction in stress, will make you wish youd made these changes sooner, and can be wonderful sources of continued motivation. Healthy lifestyle habits can help you better manage your stress response, enabling you to avoid or even reverse the negative effects of chronic stress. Making Changes Can Be Intimidating Many people feel intimidated or frustrated with making healthy lifestyle changes for a few reasons, including: Not knowing where to start: There are so many changes that can benefit health and wellness that it can be difficult to know how to begin.Doing too much at once: People often try to make too many changes at once, then find it too difficult (or let perfectionism sabotage their efforts) and give up the effort.Stress: Lets face itâ"change is difficult, especially when youre stressed. Sometimes lifestyle stress takes over and diminishes your momentum. Given that living a healthy lifestyle can help with stress relief, and that making healthy lifestyle changes can be challenging, the following resources can help you with both choosing new goals for healthy living and with making these new goals a reality by adopting new healthy habits into your lifestyle. Healthy Lifestyle Choices Here are some changes you can make to lead a healthier, less stressed lifestyle: Healthy eating: One of the most popular changes people like to make to live a healthy lifestyle is to eat differently. Because of the negative health consequences of obesity, the influence fitness has on our self-esteem, and the effects of nutrition on our stress levels and longevity, switching to a healthier diet brings some of the greatest benefits for wellness.Regular exercise: Getting regular exercise is another wonderful way to keep your weight in check, manage overall stress levels, and stay connected with others. Exercise can also help keep many health conditions at bay and is well worth the effort. The trick is to start gradually and work your way up.Quality sleep: People often underestimate the importance of getting enough sleep, and getting the right type. However, lack of adequate sleep has many negative consequencesâ"theyre subtle but significant. Getting enough sleep isnt one of the most popular changes that people resolve to make, but it should be. Because stress can rob you of sleep, and because many of the techniques that promote sleep can also reduce stress (and vice versa), its a very good idea to learn more about how stress affects sleep and how to get quality sleep when youre stressed. Financial Plan For Hire A Financial Planner - 1086 Words
If youââ¬â¢re not ready to hire a financial planner, then fear not ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢m going to explain how you can create a realistic financial plan for the next five years of your life without hiring a professional. Of course, there are benefits to having a financial planner do it for you, but if you cannot afford a planner, then you donââ¬â¢t have to settle for not having one at all. Here are nine steps that walk you through creating your own financial plan. Get organized The first thing you should do to create your financial plan is create a ââ¬Å"financial planâ⬠folder on your computer or a physical binder in real life. Organization will be the key to your success because creating a system will ensure youââ¬â¢ll follow through with your financial plan over time.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Create a subfolder or separate document and title it ââ¬Å"financial goalsâ⬠. Write down your specific financial goals for the next five years. This will be personal to you. For example, for me, I want to be out of student loan debt in five years or less. For you, it may be something completely different. Examples of financial goals include: getting out of debt, saving for a down payment on a house, building a six to eight month emergency fund, saving for retirement, and investing to build wealth. Whatever it is for you, decide what you want for your financial life for the next five years. Create a financial statement for yourself Your financial statement is a snapshot of your finances as they stand today. To create this, list all of your assets and liabilities on a spreadsheet (or piece of paper), add up each category, then subtract the liabilities from the assets. This number is your net worth. Use your financial statement to keep track of your financial progress over time. Every couple of months, update your financial statement (copy and paste the spreadsheet into a new tab ââ¬â or create a new document if youââ¬â¢re handwriting). Over the course of five years, you can track your finances and see how far youââ¬â¢ve come. Be sure to date every financial statement that you create so you have a good indicator of how youââ¬â¢re progressing over time. Create a budget Your budget is your snapshot of your income and spending.

Analysis Of Sweatshops - 769 Words
Sweatshops. The image the word provokes isnââ¬â¢t a pleasant one. A factory where people work long hours for only a small amount of money isnââ¬â¢t something we like to think about. The article published by The New York Times in 2009 entitled ââ¬Å"Where Sweatshops Are a Dreamâ⬠however, proposes a different view of these grueling working conditions. The article seeks to transform the view of most Americans from disgust to support for so called sweatshops. When the article was first published in 2009, the Obama administration was considering labor standards, something the author Nicholas Kristof believes is detrimental to undeveloped countries. As he argues, ââ¬Å"Sweatshops are only a symptom of povertyâ⬠¦ and banning them closes off one route out ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These standards prevent sweatshops from opening in places like Africa, where labor is cheap, and instead companies move to more developed countries where capital is cheaper in order t o cut down on costs. He believes the solution to better standards of living in poor countries is ââ¬Å"to promote manufacturing there. One of the best things America could do for Africa would be toâ⬠¦ encourage African importsâ⬠(Kristof). Kristofââ¬â¢s article makes many valid points and claims, but many of his points are unsubstantiated. His evidence is entirely personal examples with a bit of logic sprinkled in. He doesnââ¬â¢t use any statistics or figures to back up his claims. As a result, his article and the examples he uses only apply to undeveloped countries and donââ¬â¢t get at the heart of the issue. He addresses many concerns people have about sweatshops and working conditions, but he only briefly glosses over the effects of labor standards and why they are so detrimental. The topic Kristof seems to dance around without actually touching on is the importance of letting the free market work without restricting the market with labor standards. The heart of the issue is that labor standards in any country hurt people, not just labor standards in undeveloped countries. Aseptic transfer is the transference of bacteria or other microbial cultures fromone container to another while maintaining purity of the culture. Pure culturesââ¬âconsistof only one type of bacteria ideally the descendants from a single bacterial cell. Because microbes are present everywhere ââ¬â in the air, the work area, clothes, bodies, etc. , ââ¬â it is important to follow the rules for aseptic transfer at all times. This is the onlyway of controlling Contaminationââ¬âMaintaining purity of culture is essential in microbiology if the biologist is to beable to identify bacteria, test for antibiotic sensitivity, or maintain stock cultures. Oftenin nature a pure culture is impossible to come by because species live together. Thescientist is left working with mixed cultures. Pure cultures can be derived from mixedcultures through isolation of cultures and this also requires that sterile (aseptic)techniques to be used. Normally transference is done from colonies. A colony consists of usuallyseveral million cells that are assumed to be the descendants from one cell. Inoculations from one media to another, therefore, is usually done by removal of a fewmillion cells from one colony into a new environment. This must be done with theintegrity of all colonies remaining intact. Through the use of sterile techniques, this canbe accomplished successfully. There are a number of tools that are used for inoculation procedures. Inoculating loops are used when transferring members of a broth culture to another broth, platedmedia or an agar slant. Inoculating needles-are used when inoculating a broth culturefrom a colony on plated media or when making a stab in an agar deep or agar slantfrom broth or solid media. Forceps -are used to place sterile disks containing sometesting agent in a broth culture or on a solid media culture. Pipets-are used when transferring liquids into other liquids or onto solid media. Flaming-is used to incinerate any microbes left on loops and needles. Alcohol flaming-is used to sterilize forceps. When flaming inoculating loops and needles, careshould be taken avoid burning the plastic handle at the end of each. The metal of theloop or needle should glow red hot and then be allowed to cool before dipping it into any cultures ââ¬â if the metal is too hot it will kill the organisms that are to be used for inoculation. Alcohol flaming for the forceps is done by dipping the forceps into a smallamount of alcohol and then burning the alcohol off. The forceps should be dipped andburned three times. Care should be taken to avoid alcohol running up toward the hand. The flame will follow the alcohol and burns will result. Pipets normally used in lab are prepackaged, sterile, disposable pipets. Sometimes glass pipets are used and these are stored in cans. The glass pipets arediscarded into a pipet jar filled with disinfectant. Disposable pipets are deposited inbiohazard bags. It is important that pipettors are always used and pipetting by mouth isprohibited. How to cite Laboratory Report, Essay examples

Law Abiding Citizen free essay sample
The movie, Law Abiding Citizen, begins with a man and his daughter at a table working on individual products. A woman, presumably his wife, is in the kitchen preparing dinner when there is a knock at the door. The man answers the door and is immediately assaulted with a baseball bat. He is then tied up and stabbed with a knife. Bound on the floor, he watches one of the two assailants beat and rape his wife. His daughter who is watching from the other room is carried off by one of the assailants. The movie fades to black as if the man has lost consciousness. The next scene is of two men discussing their careers and ambitions. From the conversation, we are led to believe they are lawyers which is confirmed when we see a team of them discussing cases, research, and deciding who will try which cases. Nick, one of the duo we were introduced to earlier, is summoned by the DA (Cantrell) who wants information about the Shelton case. We will write a custom essay sample on Law Abiding Citizen or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Cantrell is told by Nick that the case went sideways due to an imperfect system. He references a particular judge, Judge Burch, leading the audience to believe this may be why the case ââ¬Å"went sidewaysâ⬠. Nick states that they should make a deal in spite of the little girl having been killed. He doesnââ¬â¢t want to chance losing the case. He states that ââ¬Å"some justice is better than no justice at allâ⬠. We are then taken to a room where Nick is sitting with the husband, Clyde, the man from the first scene of the movie. Nick proceeds to tell Clyde that one of the two men who assaulted his family has agreed to testify against the other. Clyde seems confused about this decision and wants to know what will happen to Darby if he testifies against Ames. He is told that Darby will plead guilty of 3 rd degree murder and will probably serve 5yrs. It is then that we find out that the judge ruled that the DNA evidence is inadmissible under the exclusionary rule. This is a legal principle which holds that evidence collected or analyzed in violation of the defendants constitutional rights is sometimes inadmissible. The forensic evidence including the blood found on a shirt is deemed inconclusive. Clyde is told that even though he witnessed the assault, his testimony will not be reliable because he blacked out. After arguing with the attorney, Clyde is told ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not what you know itââ¬â¢s what you can prove in court. â⬠Upon seeing the growing horror and desperation on Clydeââ¬â¢s face we are left feeling dissatisfied with the justice system and the loopholes that are sometimes present within it. We leave the husband and move into a courtroom where the deal is struck. Here we see that Nick, as the prosecuting attorney, does not like the way this case has turned out. This is especially evident when Nick tells Darby to please mess this up so he can destroy him. As Nick is leaving the courthouse with Cantrell he questions his judgment before talking to the gathered press. During the talk with the press Darby, the man who agreed to testify, shakes his hand and thanks him for being in his corner. Nick quietly tells him to get away from him and notices the husband staring at him. Nick then heads home to his wife and unborn child. Its been 10 years and Ames is being prepared for lethal injection. Nick and some of his fellow attorneys are present for the execution. Amesââ¬â¢ last statement is that he didnââ¬â¢t kill those people and that the wrong man is dying there today. As we are watching the injection it appears that something has gone horribly wrong, Ames starts convulsing and screaming. There are veins visible all over his body. Outside while trying to figure out if the machine is corrupted or has been tampered with, Nick is presented with a bottle that was found taped behind the machine. The bottle has canââ¬â¢t fight fate scratched into the front. Clarence Darby was heard saying this phrase multiple times during his time with the police. Darby receives an anonymous phone call and is told to look out of the south side window of his apartment where he seeââ¬â¢s approaching police cars. He runs out of his apartment and fires a gun at the police cars before fleeing onto a rooftop. His mysterious caller calls back and directs him to a police car where the officer has been rendered unconscious. At gunpoint Darby forces the officer to drive. They arrive at an abandoned warehouse under an old bridge where we discover the cop is really a disguised Clyde. He uses a toxin to paralyze Darby and tells him he will still be able to feel everything. Darby is taken into a warehouse and hooked up to a table with saline and adrenaline. Clyde points out various tools and proceeds to describe to him the torture that he is about to go through. We then see him start up a video recorder and use an electric saw to cut off Darbyââ¬â¢s legs. After the discovery of Darbyââ¬â¢s body the police look for possible motives and discover that Clyde Shelton owns the warehouse where Darbyââ¬â¢s body was found. When the police come to arrest Clyde he is standing in the doorway wearing only a bracelet that says daddy. Clyde is taken into custody and escorted to a cell where he is questioned . In the meantime a package arrives at Nickââ¬â¢s house and is opened by his daughter, it contains a video of Darbyââ¬â¢s execution. Nick, thinking this is an open and shut case, walks in and congratulates Clyde off the record and tells him that the world is a better place without people like Darby and Ames. On the record he asks Clyde if heââ¬â¢s sure he wants to waive his right to counsel, then proceeds to question him about the murders. He asks if Clyde murdered Clarence Darby and is answered that he wanted him dead, he killed his wife and child. He asks about Rupert Ames and is told that Rupert Ames deserved to die. That they both deserved to die. Nick then asks if Clyde arranged both of the murders and is told that he planned it in his head, over and over again. That it took him a long time. Nick thanks Clyde and starts to walk away when he is told to cancel his 12:30 lunch with Judge Roberts. To go ahead and cancel the rest of his week. He then has his words thrown in his faceâ⬠¦. itââ¬â¢s not what you know its what you can prove in court. That he has not said anything that could incriminate him in a court of law. What father wouldnââ¬â¢t want those things to happen. Clyde then states he wants to make a deal. He tells them if they get him a nice bed then they will get his full confession. At the sentencing trial the DAââ¬â¢s office asks the judge to hold Mr. Shelton without bail. Clyde tells the judge that he finds it highly prejudicial, even constitutionally offensive to keep him detained without bail and he proceeds to point out a case Day v. McDonough, docket #041325 to make his point. When the judge agrees with him he begins to mock her, stating that he canââ¬â¢t believe she was about to let him go considering that he allegedly just killed two people. He states that he fed her a couple of legal precedents and she jumped right on it. That she treats the law like its an assembly line and does she have any idea what justice is. He then asks her repeatedly whatever happened to right and wrong. Back in the cell Clyde proceeds to give Nick a detailed confession just as he promised and admits that he has another confession, thus he wants another deal. This time he wants a steak dinner from Del Friscoââ¬â¢s restaurant and he wants his iPod. This is all in return for the life of Bill Reynolds, Darbyââ¬â¢s attorney. He tells them to make sure his meal is there by 1:00 pm and he will give them Mr. Reynolds location. The warden aggravated by his demands delays the meal. This delays the search effort and results in the discovery of Mr. Reynolds body. He was hooked up to an oxygen mask that was scheduled to quit working at 1:15pm, if they hadnââ¬â¢t been delayed he would have been alive when they got there. While this is happening Clyde uses the bone from the steak to murder his cell-mate. The warden has him moved to solitary confinement The DA pulls some strings and finds a man that knew Clyde in the past. They find out that he is what they call a brain, someone who can kill people without being in the same room with them. That he has a gift for it and he is the best. They are told that if Clyde is in jail itââ¬â¢s because he wants to be there. That heââ¬â¢s a born tactician and every move he makes means something. They are advised by their contact to walk into the cell and put a bullet into his head because they wonââ¬â¢t be able to stop him otherwise. We then see Nick and Cantrell talking to Judge Burch. They ask her to wrap Clyde up in legal tape to limit contact and access to the outside world. She then asks them if they want her to violate his god given civil rights in the name of some murky sense of the greater good. After given a yes, she says sheââ¬Ës game. She warns them it wonââ¬â¢t stick for long. After she hands over the signed paper, her cell phone rings. When she answers her head explodes and she falls over dead. Itââ¬â¢s unclear if the phone exploded or she was shot. Clyde while being questioned by Nick over the death of the judge states that he is at war with the broken thing that brought them together, referring to the justice system. Clyde then tells him he has another deal release him and drop all charges by 6am or he kills everyone. As 6am rolls around the legal team anxiously awaitââ¬â¢s the next call for another victim. Everyone releases a breath when nothing happens at 6 am. As they get into their vehicles preparing to leave there are several explosions and we get a close-up of one of the lawyers face before her car explodes. The lawyers are assigned a security detail and their families are evacuated. They suspect he has an accomplice but struggle to find any connection to anyone. Clyde warns the lawyers that he is just warming up, and that he is going to bring the whole diseased temple down on their heads. One by one all of the lawyers start questioning whether they are responsible for all of these innocent lives lost because they did not proceed with a trial for mr. Sheltonââ¬â¢s family. The next casualty is Jonas Cantrell when his vehicle is gunned down and then blown up by an automated machine after the funeral of their colleague. After this many deaths the city is put on lockdown. After a tip and cross referencing the buildings sold in the area in the last ten years, they find out that clyde owns the building across from the jail. While investigating the building they discover a tunnel that leads directly to the jail. Clyde has been coming and going as he chooses. Posing as a janitor, Clyde infiltrates city hall and plants a bomb directly below the room holding a meeting of the fbi, homeland security, the sherrifs department, the philly police department and the mayor. The movie comes to a conclusion when Nick corners clyde in solitary and asks him to stop what heââ¬â¢s doing. Clyde is holding a cell phone in his hand one call and the bomb that he has set up will explode. Nick tells him that it is a decision he will have to live with for the rest of his life. Clyde says heââ¬â¢s sorry and calls the number. Nick shuts the door and runs out of the building, we then hear ringing. They have moved the bomb to Clydeââ¬â¢s cell and handcuffed it to his bed. Clyde sits on his bed and stares at the bracelet his daughter made for him while flames crawl up the wall behind him. We see Nick walk across the parking lot as part of the building explodes. This movie shows us the downside of the justice system and all of the things that can go wrong if proper protocol is not followed. It focuses on some of the issues that the law enforcement community faces when trying to put violent offenders behind bars. In protecting everyoneââ¬â¢s civil rights, sometimes the bad guys donââ¬â¢t get the justice that is deserved. Increasingly criminals are using these loopholes to get reduced sentences that may help put them back on the street sooner. As part of the law enforcement community we should strive to make sure that things like this rarely happen. If a person commitââ¬â¢s a crime they should be punished accordingly. It is a harsh reality that criminals must be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I have to agree with Nick in these instances itââ¬â¢s not what you know, itââ¬â¢s what you can prove in court. That must be one of the most frustrating things to deal with. Another issue that I noticed in the movie was the blatant abuse of power. For instance, in the scene where the DAââ¬â¢s are talking to the judge they ask her to wrap Clyde up in legal precedents to restrict his access to the outside world. She says, ââ¬Å"let me get this straight, you want me to violate his god given civil rights? â⬠ââ¬Å"ok, sure. â⬠Instances such as these are one of the leading causes of the biasââ¬â¢s that people have against the criminal justice system. Unwilling to take a chance on lowering his high conviction rate, he makes a deal with Darby, letting him plead guilty to a lesser charge and receive a reduced sentence in return for testifying against Ames. Ames is found guilty and is sentenced to death. Darby is released after a few years. Shelton feels betrayed by Rices actions and by the justice system in general. Ten years later, Amess time on death row is up. Unknown to the prosecutors and the witnesses, the cardiotoxic drug usually used in executions has been replaced with ananticonvulsant, causing Ames to die an extremely painful death. Evidence relating to tampering with the drug implicates Darby. An anonymous caller alerts Darby as the police draw near, and directs him to a remote location. Shelton, disguised as a cop, reveals himself as the caller and paralyzes Darby with puffer fish venom. He straps Darby to a table and slowly dismembers him as revenge for murdering his wife and daughter, videorecording the gory proceedings. When Darbys remains are found, circumstantial evidence tentatively ties his death to Shelton. Despite knowing the evidence is weak, Shelton surrenders himself into police custody, where he points out the flaws in Rices case against him. As he leaves the interrogation room, Rice receives a phone call from his wife, and learns that Shelton had sent a copy of the Snuff film of Darbys demise to his house, traumatising his daughter. He initially refuses to bargain with Shelton in order to get a confession. But District Attorney Jonas Cantrell (Bruce McGill) orders Rice to make a deal. In court, Shelton represents himself. He successfully argues that he should be granted bail, then berates the judge for accepting the bullshit legal precedents he himself cited and for being too eager to let madmen and murderers back on the street. The judge jails Shelton for contempt of court. Shelton demands a porterhouse steak lunch be delivered to his cell by a specific time, in return for telling where to find Darbys lawyer, who was reported missing three days earlier. Rice agrees, though the lunch is delayed by a few minutes due to the wardens pedantic security measures. Once he has his meal, Shelton provides a set of coordinates, where Rice and the others find Darbys lawyer, buried alive but suffocated when his air supply ran out while Sheltons lunch was being delayed. Shelton kills his cellmate using the steaks bone, forcing the warden to secure him in solitary confinement. Cantrell arranges a meeting with a CIA contact and brings Rice. They learn that Shelton has previously worked with the agency, creating devices to assassinate people in imaginative ways, such as a necktie that kept getting tighter when it was tied, thus strangling the victim. Further, they are warned that Shelton is capable of killing anyone he wishes. During a meeting with Rice and Cantrell, the judge is killed when she answers her cell phone and it explodes. A number of Rices assistants are killed by car bombs, one of them Sarah Lowell (Leslie Bibb). As Rice and Cantrell leave the funeral of Lowell, Cantrell is killed by a weaponized bomb disposal robot. The mayor (Viola Davis) puts the city under lockdown and promotes Rice to acting District Attorney. Rice learns that Shelton owns an auto garage next to the prison. A tunnel from the garage leads to a cache of guns, disguises, and other equipment below the solitary confinement cells, and secret entrances to each cell. He and Police Detective Dunnigan (Colm Meaney) realize Shelton wanted to be in solitary, allowing him to easily leave the prison without detection and commit the murders. Evidence in the tunnel points Rice to Sheltons next target, city hall, where the mayor is holding an emergency meeting with city officials. Rice and his men cannot find Shelton, but discover evidence pointing to a cell-phone-activated suitcase bomb in the room directly below the meeting. Shelton returns to his garage after planting the city hall bomb, then returns to his cell. He is surprised to find Rice waiting for him. Rice berates Shelton for taking revenge because of the pain he suffered. Shelton suggests another deal, but Rice refuses this time, saying that he does not make deals with murderers anymore, and thanks Shelton for teaching him that. Rice and Dunnigan secure Shelton in the cell and leave. Despite being pleased that Rice had finally learned his lesson, Shelton dials the cell phone on the city hall bomb. Shelton realizes too late that Rice has moved the bomb to his cell and the cells entrance to the tunnel has been sealed. Shelton looks upon his daughters bracelet with a sense of sadness, accepting his fate as the bomb explodes

Plastic Architecture - Building The Biodome
Plastic Architecture - Building The Biodome By definition a biodome is a large controlled internal environment in which plants and animals from much warmer or colder regions than the region of the biodome can be kept in the natural conditions of their own sustainable eco-systems. One example of a biodome would be the Eden Project in the United Kingdom which includes the largest biodome greenhouse in the world. There are three biodomes at the Eden Project: one with a tropical climate, one with a mediterranean, and one that is a local temperate biodome. Large biodomes are architectural wonders, while the designs have much in common and take from the geodesic domes patented by Buckminister Fuller in 1954, there have been more recent innovations in building materials that have made the enormous light-friendly roofs in biodomes and other architectural projects possible. The Eden Projects biodomes are constructed with tubular steel frames with hexagonal external cladding panels made from the thermoplastic ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) replacing the use of glass, too heavy a material to use. According to Interface Magazine,ETFE foil is essentially a plastic polymer related to Teflon and is created by taking the polymer resin and extruding it into a thin film. It is largely used as a replacement for glazing due to its high light transmission properties. Transparent windows are created either by inflating two or more layers of foil to form cushions or tensioning into a single skin membrane. Plastic Architecture Lehnert, an avid yachtsman and three-time winner of the Admirals Cup, was researching ETFE for use as a possible material for sails. For that purpose, ETFE was not successful, however Lehnert continued to research the material and developed ETFE-based building materials suitable for roof and cladding solutions. These cladding systems, based on plastic cushions filled with air, have since pushed the boundaries of architecture and allowed the creation of highly innovative structures such as the Eden Project or the Beijing National Aquatics Center in China. Vector Foiltec According to Vector Foiltecs history, Chemically, ETFE is constructed by substituting a fluorine atom in PTFE (Teflon) with an ethylene monomer. This retains some of PTFEs qualities such as its non-stick self cleaning properties, as in non-stick pans, whilst increasing its strength, and in particular, its resistance to tearing. Vector Foiltec invented drop bar welding, and used ETFE to construct a small cable structure, originally made from FEP, which had failed due to the low tear resistance of the material. ETFE provided the perfect substitute, and the Texlonà ® cladding system was born. Vector Foiltecs first project was for a zoo. The zoo looked into the possibility to implement a new concept whereby visitors would pass through the zoos in small confined pathways while the animals would be, according to Stefan Lehnert, almost living in broad areasââ¬Å"â⬠¦almost in freedom.â⬠The zoo, the Burgerà ´s Zoo in Arnheim, hence also looked for transparent roofs, which were to cover a large area and at the same time would allow the passage of UV rays. The Burgerà ´s zoo project eventually became the very first project of the firm in 1982. Stefan Lehnert has been nominated for a 2012 European Inventor Award for his work with ETFE. He has also been called the inventor of the biodome.

Author Case Study and an Application Case Study Essay
Author Case Study and an Application Case Study - Essay Example This was based on the understanding of economic development and how this was affected by the public administration which one was a part of. The different developments with public administration ultimately led to a large amount of differences with public administration and how it should be probed. The concepts that Lindblom was associated with were developed with public administration and the different arenas which it affected. Lindblom was interested in how the public administration could easily affect the structure and process of economics, social and cultural viewpoints. The concept of public administration became essential specifically by the need to control and develop the different structures which were associated with public administration. The first point which Lindblom shows is based on the social and organizational control structures. The belief is that any type of organization requires control structures to continue functioning and to balance out the social and economic order which one is a part of. Lindblom claims that the best way to do this is through unilateral controls, which consists of a hierarchy. He also states that it is possible to have effective controls with polyarchies and the market; however, these are limited based on the type of structure which one is in. The focus of each of these controls is based on maintaining, controlling and developing society under the leadership of a specific set of individuals. At the same time, there is the ability to control and monitor the public administration through the commands which are used by the administration (Fry, 264). The concept of controlling different social and cultural orders through social administration expands with the understanding that there has to be a balance between the rights and privileges of individuals while creating the necessary approach to different needs of those in society. This leads to Lindblomââ¬â¢s

What are the main factors contributing to low expectancy in the Essay - 1
What are the main factors contributing to low expectancy in the developing world Investigate possible solutions to these problems - Essay Example re (2011), ââ¬Å"life expectancy is an indicator of how long a person can expect to live on average given prevailing mortality rates.â⬠Different countries have different life expectancy rates because of differences in prevailing mortality factors. Existing research shows that there is generally low expectancy in developing countries as compared to developed world (Dalkhat, 2007). In this essay, the various factors that accounts for the low expectancy in developing world are critically analysed. The table above gives a very glaring proof of the fact that poverty is a factor that accounts for low expectancy in developing countries. This is because all least scoring countries on the expectancy have very low low per capita income as compared to the first ten highest scoring countries. Poverty leads to malnutrition, ill-health and other life threatening health and social issues that affect the chances of people living for long. Highly related to the first factor, poverty causes most developing countries not to have very comprehensive and well managed healthcare system in place. Undeniably, quality healthcare is responsible for improved and increased quality healthcare of the citizenry. The Insurance Risk Guide (2009) outlines three major components of quality healthcare system. These include ââ¬Å"adequate scientiï ¬ c knowledge for supporting high quality health careâ⬠(Insurance Risk Guide, 2009). This point trumpets the need for comprehensive scientific research into finding new and most workable discoveries that need to be put in place in the health sector. Without any doubt, this cannot be done in the absence of personnel, financing sourcing and scientific techniques. Sadly, these cannot be done in the midst of poverty. The second component is adequate access to Health Care. In developing countries, it is sad to note that access to healthcare is only available to the privileged few. The final component is Medical Persons and Medical Institutions. The meaning of this

Models In The Fashion Industry Cultural Studies Essay
Models In The Fashion Industry Cultural Studies Essay In the contemporary world, fashion has become a powerful force. For most of the people in our daily life, fashion is something they read about or buy in stores. In a broad sense, fashion means all things and a global business which covers a diverse range of commercial activities, ranging from the unglamorous worlds of mass garment production to celebrity- patronized fashion shows and the associated reportage in the fashion press (JacksonShaw, 2009). In the fashion world, modeling industry plays a central role in its developments. Thousands of people, especially those little girls, are dreaming to be involved in the fashion industry. In their impression, models work in photographers studios or runways or on the cover of magazines, they are in a fun; models are creative because they create their own look (Parmentier Fischer, 2011). They are the representation of artistic creativity and self- expression who always change their performance to project an appropriate image for different si tuations and specific clients and designs. In this sense, despite whether those youngsters have ever sought or gained entry into the field of fashion, in nowadays, they are encouraged to regard the life of the fashion model as an ideal myth. It is no exaggeration to suggest that many young girls treat being a fashion model as among the most glamorous and desirable of possible futures (Wolf, 1991). This article focuses on the real status of models in the fashion industry. Viewing models self-commodification as forms of aesthetic, entrepreneurial, and immaterial labor, I turn my attention on the polarized work of fashion models. Basing on the critical theory, this article uses three approaches (The culture industry, Governmentality, creativity) to explore how certain actors in a dynamic, constantly contested, cultural field may experience constraints on their individual identity quests. First, I argue that how the life of models looks like to the masses, and look for some reasons that why people would like to pursue the life of being a model. Then I focus more discussions on the unsustainable modeling identity projects in the fashion industry. Act as the aesthetic labor, models are faced with many restrictions and risks not only come from the groups that they cooperate with like agency, designer, editor, but also their competitors. Besides of that, some models also suffer from t he discrimination and inequality because of the divisions of the fashion modeling industry. So in this sector, I will take the plus- sized model for example in order to advance our understanding the institutional contexts in fashion industry and our insight into the limitations of those not general models face in pursuing their careers. Searching method For the sake of a deep and comprehensive understanding of fashion modeling, the best way to do the research is using participant observations and interviews. According to many scholars, they adopt this method interviewing models in different levels, gender, age and so on. Basing on the questions and contents, they do data selection to integrate the valuable information and report the results. Because of some limitations, however, I cannot do such interview, so I take full advantage of other resources. This thesis mainly adopts two methods of study. One is documentary research method, which is collecting a large number of materials about the modeling fashion industry in order to understand this field and occupation more comprehensively. First, I select some books and journals which ranging from the history of fashion industry such as marketing todays fashion (Paola Mueller, 1980), to the development of this field like Angela McRobbies British fashion design: Rag trade or image industr y? (1998). Basing on the predecessors research achievements I document an intensive aesthetic labor process. I also search information on the internet to see the characters of fashion models and some debates on the fashion modeling industry. Besides, I pay close attention to a reality show American Britains Next Top Model. By observing and analyzing the process of the competition and track the future development of participants I realize the ruthlessness of fashion modeling industry. The other searching method is comparative analysis approach. In order to highlight the contradictory work in this aesthetic labor market, I compare the different treatment between the high fashion models and commercial models, and the discrimination of those plus-sized models. Literature review Since it is considered to have originated in the mid- nineteen century in Paris, models has appeared in the view of the public. With confidence and enthusiasm, significant numbers of young women launched their own labels from the mid-1980s onwards. Back to the history, there are some critical factors to the success of start of fashion industry which include the support from the government and local authority by subsidy; the cooperation between designers with the producers, agencies and labors; recognition of the distinctiveness of fashion work as an independent cultural and artistic practice, not a conventional business activity. The recent researches have focused attention on different aspects of embodiment in contemporary labor practices, such as detailing the ways in which bodies are managed and surveyed at work (Freeman, 2000; Entwistle, 2004), how bodily performances at work are gendered (Taylor and Tyler, 2000; Gottfried, 2003) and the role of dress in marking out identities at work (Entwistle, 2001). Then a classic account of emotional labor as important in terms of opening up questions about the ways in which contemporary work practices harness the many embodied capabilities of workers. Within this broad research agenda, analysis has been directed towards aesthetic labor as one dimension of current trends in work practices (Pettinger, 2004; Speiss and Waring, 2005). In this article, I argue that previous scholarship on modeling fashion industry seldom explore the tensions between fashion as art form and the demand of a ruthlessly commercial industry. Building on previous research that has examined the staged performance of fashion models, I look for the backstage aesthetic labor process. Combining culture industry, governmentality and creativity, I focus on the unsustainable identity projects in the modeling fashion industry. The contradictory work in the modeling fashion industry From the catwalk to the high-style boutique, the common perception of the modeling fashion industry is glamour and indulgence. Indeed, to many people especially in nowadays, fashion modeling is much more than an occupation, but a dream of every little girl. Just as the feminist scholar Naomi Wolf suggests that it is a fantasy that probably the most widespread contemporary dream shared by young women from all backgrounds (Wolf, 1991). People aspires the ideal model life, which means to become a member of an elite and small group. Their bodies and personalities are intensely sought after for their aesthetic singularity and in return they can get some rewards such as money, fame, luxurious goods as well as celebrity status. Undoubtedly, those models careers not just limited in the field of fashion but extend to other culturally celebrated professions like singer or film actor. The models work as the aesthetic labor, which combines the affective, emotional and physical labor, they play to an advancing self production to extend beyond the confines of modeling work into daily life experience. As aesthetic laborers, they are demanded the effort of body in the production of an appropriately attractive appearance for work. However, in practice, models are always subject to fashions gaze, and endure many restrictions or discriminations coming from both outside and themselves, such as they have to engage in a range of bodily disciplines that relied on thin aesthetics, and do on beyond work hours, etc. We will talk about the restriction from the following aspects. 3.1 Personality In contemporary society, models are regarded as walking mannequins or passive hangers for clothes. The modeling industry moves in shorter cycles than ever before, comparing with other sectors, it is a personality based and subjective industry. In modeling much emphasis is placed on the projection of personality (Entwistle Wissinger, 2006), which forms an integral aspect of the aesthetic labor of freelancing models. Thus models see their bodies as objects of aesthetic contemplation through all manner of bodily work. It just adapt to the governmentality theory that Banks (2007) comes up in his book. It demonstrates that instead of using force and coercion, how the cultural worker has come to be governed only by subjectivizing discourses of enterprise. So models who want to succeed talk of having to become self-managing and astute about their product-their entire embodied self, must do self-control to ensure their current status. To produce a fashionable look, models need to wear the mo st fashionable clothes and go to the most fashionable parties. This situation will not be changed until they are successful. In the case of supermodels, they may no longer have to obey others instruction; they will be given the designer clothes, can cooperate with distinguished photographers and even can expand the career into other sectors. Take Tyra Banks for instance, as an excellent multi-dwelling star, she began her career as model, simultaneously she steps into other professions being the host of reality show, the actress, singer and dancer. Each of this field she has achieved remarkable achievement. These practices involve both aesthetic labor, in which workers invest in styling their bodies and personalities to get and keep work (Entwistle Wissinger, 2006), and entrepreneurial labor, in which workers invest time, energy and funds to foster professional relationships, and build their productive capacity in return for uncertain rewards. These two labors demand workers be enterprising, which they work to create an image that will sell. Models valorize their image, an image that is constructed on a whole day basis, making it difficult for models to distinguish between when they are on or off the job. This work to produce an image may be understood as aesthetic labor (Entwistle Wissinger, 2006). 3.2 Marginalization within the field The fashion system places a quite different valorization on different types of work within the field. There are quite lot of discriminations and unequal treatments between commercial models and editorial models. Commercial work is done for catalogues, website, and department stores; the aim is promoting products ranging from food to drink. While the contracts are regarded as relatively low status compared with the high-status brands promoted by editorial models. While one of the essential features of editorial models is being featured on the cover of or within the fashion pages of high fashion magazines like Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Elle. Be the supermodel also means to modeling for couturiers and designers fashion shows and to be hired as the face for an international luxury brand of a fashion product such as shoes, clothing, or cosmetics(McRobbie, 2002). In contrast to commercial models, whose look are more conventionally beautiful or handsome, fashion models are referred to as ha ving an editorial look, their extreme appearance are often be described with such adjectives as quirky or edgy. A professional model is someone who consents in writing to or performs modeling for the transfer of the exclusive right to the use of his or her name, portrait, picture or image, for advertising or trade purpose. Models engage in identity construction within a field comprised of an international net work of relationships between various mutually dependent, but unequally powerful. But most models will do some of the less prestigious types of commercial work over the course of their careers, only a small set engages in editorial work, as it is much more restricted and competitive. When watching the American Next Top Model, the competitors are required have some personalities to be outstanding but as the same time observe the rules of the industry. They must match up what the photographers and judges demands and satisfied their clients. To those competitors they scarcely make their own decision, and the emotions and attitudes cannot express in the process of work. The payment between commercial models and editorial models also has a big disparity. The structure of the work means that models are usually hired by the hour, day or project, which means they have no guarantees of continued employment. Rewards for top models are disproportionately high but most models incomes are modest at best. Like other artistic careers, fashion modeling consists mainly of short-term contractual ties, in which employment is on a per-project basis, and teams are assembled around specific jobs which are then dispersed after the project is finished. In this sense, it is hard for many commercial models to find a permanently clients to afford their basic life.

Relation to marriage Essay
Acclaimed as the ââ¬Å"Father of English Literatureâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the English Homerâ⬠before William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, the writer of The Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Prologue and Tale, was born to a middle-class family in ca. 1343 and was once a member of the house of Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster. Regarded as one of the most famous and significant poets in the medieval period, Chaucer was well-known for his use of dream-vision form, his masterpiece The Canterbury Tales (ca. 1387), and more importantly, his contribution to the English language by importing more than 1000 new words that were derived from foreign languages. In The Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s Prologue, Chaucerââ¬â¢s precise presentation of the Wife of Bathââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"experienceâ⬠(line 1) of marriage, which she believes to be ââ¬Å"right ynough for [her] to speke of wo that is [inside]â⬠(lines 1 ââ¬â 3), brings forth to her convincing arguments about marriage. Obviously in the beginning of the Prologue, Chaucer suggests the idea of the Wife of Bath as being a five-time, experienced married woman, whose first marriage experience comes when she is only ââ¬Å"twelf year of ageâ⬠(line 4). The wise woman is without doubt an advocate of marriage, as she is always ready to ââ¬Ëfight backââ¬â¢ all kinds of attacks concerning her marrying five times with her strong, convincing arguments with references to the Bible ââ¬â although she ââ¬Å"graunte it welâ⬠(line 101) the truth that ââ¬Å"[one] does well not to marryâ⬠(1 Corinthians 7.1), as ââ¬Å"it would be better to continue to live aloneâ⬠(1 Corinthians 7. 8) as a widow, the Wife of Bath strongly believes that there is nothing wrong to marry more than once, as she always agrees with the idea that ââ¬Å"to be wedded is no sinneâ⬠(line 57) as long as ââ¬Å"[her] housbonde is fro the world agoonâ⬠(line 53) ââ¬â according to her idea, it is of ââ¬Å"no repreveâ⬠(line 90) and ââ¬Å"withouten exception of bigamyeâ⬠(line 92) to ââ¬Å"wedde if that [her] make [dies]â⬠(line 91). Despite the advices from other men, who ââ¬Å"[keep on] [conseiling] [her] to be oonâ⬠(line 72), she is convinced that she does the right thing as there is no law that forbids her marrying, and whether to marry is up to her ââ¬Å"owene juggementâ⬠(line 74) and decision. Her firm belief and strong arguments are, in my opinion, the results of her awareness of the law and her situation in the society, as well as her understanding of the Bible. Regardless of the higher values of maidenhood, the Wife of Bath believes that marriage is of the same importance as virginity as it is God who ââ¬Å"[tells] us to wexe and multoplyeâ⬠(line 28) and it is impossible to do so without marriage. In her argument about virginity and marriage, she likens wives as ââ¬Å"barly breedâ⬠(line 150), which ââ¬Å"[the] Lord Jesu [uses] to [refressh] many a manâ⬠(line 152). Such metaphor, in my view, works well to emphasize the importance of wives (ââ¬Å"barly breedâ⬠), despite its inferiority to the purity of virginity, which she likens as ââ¬Å"breed of pured whete seedâ⬠(line 149). The Wife of Bath, furthermore, believes that marriage suits her the best and is what she desperately needs, as it is her will to ââ¬Å"bistowe the flour of al [her] age in thââ¬â¢actes and in fruit of marriageâ⬠(line 118 ââ¬â 119) ââ¬â it will definitely be a disaster for her if she has to ââ¬Å"laden al [her] lif in chastiteeâ⬠(line 100), despite the fact that ââ¬Å"virginitee is great perfeccioun, and continence [is] with devociounâ⬠(line 111 ââ¬â 112), which is according to the Almighty God, the way to live a perfect life.

Shakespearean Love in A Midsummer Nights Dream
A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream, written in 1600, has been called one of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s greatest love plays. It has been interpreted as a romantic story in which love ultimately conquers all odds, but its actually about the importance of power, sex, and fertility, not love. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s concepts of love are represented by the powerless young lovers, the meddling fairies and their magical love, and forced love as opposed to chosen love. These points undermine the argument that this play is a typical love story and fortify the case that Shakespeare intended to demonstrate the powers that triumph over love. Power vs. Love The first concept presented of love is its powerlessness, represented by the ââ¬Å"trueâ⬠lovers. Lysander and Hermia are the only characters in the play who are really in love. Yet their love is forbidden, by Hermiaââ¬â¢s father and Duke Theseus. Hermiaââ¬â¢s father Egeus speaks of Lysanderââ¬â¢s love as witchcraft, saying of Lysander, ââ¬Å"this man hath bewitched the bosom of my childâ⬠and ââ¬Å"with feigning voice verses of feigning love ... stolââ¬â¢n the impression of her fantasy.â⬠These lines maintain that true love is an illusion, a false ideal. Egeus goes on to say that Hermia belongs to him, proclaiming, ââ¬Å"she is mine, and all my right of her / I do estate unto Demetrius.â⬠These lines demonstrate the lack of power that Hermia and Lysanderââ¬â¢s love holds in the presence of familial law. Furthermore, Demetrius tells Lysander to ââ¬Å"yield / Thy crazà ©d title to my certain right,â⬠which means that a father must give his daughter only to the worthiest suitor, regardless of love. Finally, Hermia and Lysanderââ¬â¢s eventual wedlock is due to two things: fairy intervention and noble decree. The fairies enchant Demetrius to fall in love with Helena, freeing Theseus to allow Hermia and Lysanderââ¬â¢s union. With his words, ââ¬Å"Egeus, I will overbear your will, / For in the temple, by and by, with us / These couples shall eternally be knit,â⬠the duke is proving that it is not love that is responsible for joining two people, but the will of those in power. Even for true lovers, it isnt love that conquers, but power in the form of royal decree. Weakness of Love The second idea, the weakness of love, comes in the form of fairy magic. The four young lovers and an imbecilic actor are entangled in a love game, puppet-mastered by Oberon and Puck. The fairiesââ¬â¢ meddling causes both Lysander and Demetrius, who were fighting over Hermia, to fall for Helena. Lysanderââ¬â¢s confusion leads him to believe he hates Hermia; he asks her, ââ¬Å"Why seekââ¬â¢st thou me? Could not this make thee know / the hate I bear thee made me leave thee so?â⬠That his love is so easily extinguished and turned to hatred shows that even a true loverââ¬â¢s fire can be put out by the feeblest wind. Furthermore, Titania, the powerful fairy goddess, is bewitched into falling in love with Bottom, who has been given a donkeyââ¬â¢s head by mischievous Puck. When Titania exclaims ââ¬Å"What visions have I seen! / Methought I was enamored of an ass,â⬠we are meant to see that love will cloud our judgment and make even the normally level-headed person do foolish things. Ultimately, Shakespeare makes the point that love cannot be trusted to withstand any length of time and that lovers are made into fools. Finally, Shakespeare provides two examples of choosing powerful unions over amorous ones. First, there is the tale of Theseus and Hippolyta. Theseus says to Hippolyta, ââ¬Å"I wooed thee with my sword / And won thy love doing thee injuries.â⬠Thus, the first relationship that we see is the result of Theseus claiming Hippolyta after defeating her in battle. Rather than courting and loving her, Theseus conquered and enslaved her. He creates the union for solidarity and strength between the two kingdoms. Fairy Love Next is the example of Oberon and Titania, whose separation from each other results in the world becoming barren. Titania exclaims, ââ¬Å"The spring, the summer / The childing autumn, angry winter, change / Their wonted liveries, and the mazà ©d world / By their increase, now knows not which is which.â⬠These lines make it clear that these two must be joined in consideration not of love but of the fertility and health of the world. The subplots in A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream demonstrate Shakespeareââ¬â¢s dissatisfaction with the idea of love as a supreme power and his belief that power and fertility are the prime factors in deciding a union. The images of greenery and nature throughout the story, as when Puck speaks of Titania and Oberon meeting neither ââ¬Å"in grove or green, / By fountain clear, or spangled starlight sheenâ⬠further suggest the importance that Shakespeare places on fertility. Also, the fairy presence within Athens at the end of the play, as sung by Oberon, suggests that lust is the enduring power and without it, love cannot last: ââ¬Å"Now, until the break of day / Through this house each fairy stray / To the best bride-bed will we / Which by us shall blessed be.â⬠Ultimately, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream suggests that believing only in love, creating bonds based on a fleeting notion rather than on lasting principles such as fertility (offspring) and power (security), is to be ââ¬Å"enamored of an ass.ââ¬
